"A few years ago, Buerkle [Professor of Sociology at Temple University and a former musician] was visiting New Orleans for the first time. Part of his mission was to locate a prominent New Orleans jazzman. Danny Barker, who had come home alter many years of playing in the North. Barker had been a long-time guitarist and banjo player with Cab Calloway, He had worked with Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet, among others. Buerkle had thought of telephoning Barker requesting an opportunity to meet him, but then decided a visit to the New Orleans Jazz Museum would be the more appropriate first approach. A quick walk over to Dumaine Street (the museum's former location) and into the entrance. There a man greeted him and Buerkle said, 'I'm looking for Danny Barker, the world's greatest banjo player. Can you help me?" The man smiled and said: 'Speakin' to ya!' With these words this book began."
