Lysodren Tablets for Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma Treatment
Lysodren (brand name for Mitotane) is an anticancer medication that is used to treat hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease) or adrenal gland carcinoma. In dogs, Cushing's disease occurs naturally and is either pituitary-dependent or adrenal-dependent. About 80% to 85% of Cushing's is pituitary-dependent, meaning it's triggered by a tumor on the pituitary, a pea-sized gland at the base of the brain.
Lysodren destroys the layers of the adrenal gland that produce cortisol. It requires careful monitoring and can have severe side effects. Treatment with mitotane involves an initiating phase and a maintenance phase. The initiating phase arrests the disease and restores the dog to a more normal state.
